Ministry of dinosaurs
July 7th, 2007 by herinde

Here’s an art project I encountered in the front office of the Danish minister of culture Brian Mikkelsen. As far as I know it’s still there. The piece is a seemingly ordinary cup of coffee placed on a windowsill a few metres away from the actual office of the minister. Every 10 seconds, a mechanism triggers shockwaves (well, more like ripples) on the surface of the coffee (hence the title “Jurassic Java”). Discrete and brilliant. The artist’s name is Kristoffer Akselbo (photo: Simon Ladefoged).

I’ve seen the Jurassic Java-cup too. And it sure does seem like a dinosaur is slowly but surely approching the Ministers office. Very efficient way of using ripples to tell a subtle story.
Perhaps the key to the work is to figure out who the dinosaur is … It could be interpreted as an subtle stab towards the Danish cultural policy of today.
