The Empire Spire: A miniature-version of the Empire State Building is to replace the historic landmarktower of the Danish Parliament-building
April 1st, 2007 by Nadja
A new wave of ‘republican architecture’ has hit Denmark.
‘The association for a crown-free-democracy’ has been lobbying for several years to be allowed to rebuilt, remodel og redecorate several of Copenhagen’s landmarks. The idea is that all royal details and symbols on the buildings associated with democracy should be replaced by more suiting symbols. The key issue being the spire of the parliament building that untill this day has been ‘crowned’ with three royal crowns on the top of the spire.
The original tower will now be replaced by a new structure called The Empire Spire. It is inspired by the Empire State Building in New York and the building-project is sponsored by the U.S. as a symbol of the outstanding friendship between Denmark and the U.S. for the past few years.
The Empire Spire is created by reknowned American architect April Fools.

The new spire is to be revealed today, April 1st - but untill then we feature this picture of The Empire Spire still under construction with the original crowns intact. The horseriding gentleman in the front is a statue Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen.

Even for a 1sth April joke I find it terrifying…
I know - my Aprilfools imagination almost scared myself…
The picture is real, though. The tower is under reconstruction, and to me it sure does look like the Empire State Building. But from all I’ve heard it will look the same way it used to. No worries :-)
I will try not to worry then.
