Sometimes affinity marketing becomes so appealing that it’s appalling…

Yesterday my spam-filter caught an interesting piece of commercial mail titled: Aquazone Seven Seas Desktop Aquarium - now 20 % off.
And what do you know…working intensively with SHARE A BRAINWAVE lately apparantly has put waves, water, fish and aquariums so top of my mind, that I’m an easy target for any information containing either of those words…Cause I actually opened the mail and was asked:
Have you always dreamed of owning a aquarium filled with exotic fishes and sealife but the time, cost, and maintenance of a real tank was simply too much?
The answer to that question is a simple NO. I find aqauriums fascinating and love snorkelling, but I have never ever dreamt of owning one of my own. So the offer of…
- 40 different species of photo-realistic fresh and saltwater fish, turtles, sharks, and jellyfish!
- Virtual schools of one or more species with realistic grouping behavior
- Beautiful, realistic day and night lighting conditions
- Digital food – feed them and watch them eat
- “Tapping” on the glass – watch as the fish watch you
- Fish cam – closely follow your favorite fish friends
- Soothing sound effects
- Your choice of over 20 fantastic and photorealistic backgrounds - customize them with your own photos
- Pop-up interface – customize your aquarium on the fly
…seems somewhat rediculous to me. Why spend 25$ on a series of digital fish?
However - research is research…so I wound up following the link … and the introtext instantly stated:
Your dream has come true! Aquazone provides you with a virtual aquarium so vibrant, so life-like, you will swear the fish are real! It’s so easy: just pick your tank, add your favorite fish, and you are ready to discover the beauty and tranquility of Aquazone!
And now I’m sitting here realizing how efficient affinity marketing can be… The fish really do look beautiful and very lively. And the tranqulity of an aquarium sure sounds appealing…
But really…that reaction is somewhat appalling…I would never ever have even opened the e-mail if I wasn’t in a “wavy” state of mind. And I would surely never have followed the link to the ‘Aquashop’ if it hadn’t been for SHARE A BRAINWAVE. And even if I had followed the link I would never ever have considered buying a digital Aquarium… I’m not going to buy this one either - but I’m surprised that I’m even slightly tempted.
I realize - of course - that this was just a piece of commercial mail that was literally spammed to 1000000’s of in-boxes, and that those who sent this particular mail had no idea, that I am a very easy target when it comes to the water-waves-fish-diving-market these days.
But the timing of this mail was so brilliant that it is scary - and frankly I’m a bit disturbed by my sudden infatuation with digital fish…
